Yonathan Zohar, PhD, is Professor of Marine Sciences, Chair of the Department of Marine Biotechnology and Head of the Aquaculture Research Center at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He is also the former Director of the University of Maryland Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. He has 40 years of experience in the field of marine biotechnology with a focus on sustainable aquaculture and fisheries.
Dr. Zohar is widely recognized for his pioneering research and development programs on high-value marine fish and shellfish, which he has translated into commercial applications in the aquaculture industry. His fields of expertise include broodstock management, hatchery technologies, recirculating marine aquaculture and biotechnology. He has collaborated with and consulted for the aquaculture industry worldwide on a diverse range of species.
Dr. Zohar has published over 230 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters, and is the inventor of 10 issued international patents in aquaculture and biotechnology. He is regularly invited to deliver keynote and plenary lectures at conferences around the world and has served on many state, federal and international aquaculture and marine biotechnology panels and committees. He has received multiple prestigious honors and awards in the US and globally.
He has his BS and MS in Oceanography/Marine Biology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel; and his Ph.D. in Fish Biology and Aquaculture, from the University of Paris, France.
